The Message: Blizzard Heels–A Story of Self Admiration
by R. Renée Bembry
"Wear heels!" Priscilla insisted last week. "It is a party you know!"
"It's a party all right," giggled Mika admiring her clone through a full-length mirror. "Destiny awaits your alluring presence!"
She slipped a stockinged foot into a bright red pump and then twisted back to front inspecting her apparel. After flicking lint she lifted from her dress, she pulled on an overcoat. "Let's go turn some heads," she laughed winking and kissing at her reflection.
"Jeez!" she whined rolling her sedan from the garage. "I have to drive through snow again!"
'At least the road lay clear of traffic,' she thought a few miles later… just before the vehicle began convulsing!
"OMG… This can't be happening! How can a car breakdown in the middle of a party?"
Parked at the curb, Mika opened the door and stared down at the slushy snow.
Salt, sand, and tire soil stared up at her.
Outside the car, she traded glances between shiny red heels and dirty snow piles lining the street.
"No way am I going to make it over those hills!" she admitted.
Meticulously, she walked her pumps over snow tracks left by drivers of working vehicles until finally she reached a clearing and directed her heels from the street. By then, filthy slush had completely saturated her shoes, stockings, and feet.
"Party or no party, I might as well have not worn these shoes!" she protested knowing more galoshes than any girl could don in a sustained season aligned her closet floor. "Oh Miss Prissy Priscilla!" she scoffed.
"At least I didn't fall and break my neck," she snickered after making it over the icy sidewalk.
Oak trees shadowed her from sun rays peering through a cloud as she approached the house.
Pulling a hand from a pocket, she pressed the bell button.
Within seconds, Priscilla flung open the door.
"It's about time you got here!" she teased surveying her friend. "But why are your feet wet? Why are you wearing those heels?"
The widening door revealed other guests frolicking about in warm cold-weather boots.
"Didn't you get my message? I changed my mind about heels after all that snow fell yesterday!"
